Splash out on a little luxury whilst in Mui Ne

Considering the fact that most people come here for the beach, choosing where to stay is perhaps the most important decision to be made during a visit here. There are a lot of places to choose from, mostly in the mid-range or top-end bracket, and though budget places are thin on the ground, there are still a few reasonable options. All resorts and hotels are strung along the 10km beach road, many backing right on to the beach, and others on the opposite side of the road.

Since Mui Ne is popular with residents of Saigon for a weekend retreat, prices often jump considerably then, so if you plan to stay just a few days, you can make it cheaper by arriving early in the week. If you arrive when occupancy is low, you should be able to negotiate a discount.

Recommended Mui Ne hotels and resorts

Small Garden: Just a handful of basic but adequate bungalows in a tidy compound, with friendly and helpful staff and rates that won’t break the bank. US$10-20. 48 Nguyen Dinh Chieu, Tel: +84 (0)62 384 7012.

Thai Hoa Resort: This is one of the few budget places on Mui Ne Beach, and while its concrete rooms are not inspiring, they are kept very clean and are set around an attractive garden and behind a good stretch of beach. US$25-70. 56 Huynh Thuc Khang. tel: +84 (0)62 384 7320.

Full Moon Resort: Tastefully furnished thatched bungalows and rooms in a relaxing compound run by a French-Vietnamese couple. The ideal place to base yourself if you plan to learn to wind-surf or kite-surf as the owner is one of Mui Ne’s top instructors. US$55-90.  84 Nguyen Dinh Chieu. tel: +84 (0)62 384 7008.

Little Mui Ne Cottages: This well-run mid-range option has big, airy bungalows with bamboo furnishings, some with beach view and others looking on to the garden, where there’s a sizable swimming pool. There’s also free internet and bicycles available for guests’ use. US$55-165. 10b Huynh Thuc Khang. tel: +84 (0)62 384 7550.

Mui Ne Sailing Club: This stand-out resort features beautifully-designed, thatched bungalows with solid furnishings and local textiles on the walls, set in a lush tropical garden. It also has an attractive swimming pool and a popular bar and restaurant, plus a surfing instruction centre. US$80-170.  24 Nguyen Dinh Chieu. tel: +84 (0)62 384 7440...More details and booking

Thuy Thuy: This place has just a few well-designed and well-appointed bungalows set in a large garden, and there’s a pool and spa as well. It’s in a fairly central position along the beach, but on the opposite side of the road, so it’s a short walk to step on the sand. US$50-70. 123 Nguyen Dinh Chieu. tel: +84 (0)62 384 7357.

Some resorts are very isolated, which encourages guests to use the on-site restaurants. This may be fine for some, but if you’re the type who likes to get out and about, look for somewhere to stay with bars and restaurants on the road nearby.
